say i saw a poll this morning, he's up nearly 60% of americans believe obama will win the debates. that's always a rather precarious place to go into a debate, isn't it, as the clear favorite because expectation levels can often exceed performance. >> that is definitely the case. you know, the president -- we're taking this debate very seriously. we know that there's a certain expectation on our side. we also know what history tells us, that challengers normally win the first debate, just by the fact that they're standing on the stage with the president. that elevates them. and they normally come into these things as underdogs so we're coming into this debate very realistic that mitt romney is likely to win, if he plays his cards right. if he performs and fills in those details and has that conversation with the american people instead of having, you know, a punching match and just leveling insults at the president like he's done over the past two years, if he fills in his policy details, talks in specifics about his plans for the future, he could win this debate. but you know wha

but disproportionately for mitt romney rather than president obama. does that make the debates all the more relevant and vital? >> no question about it. i would pointed out to you in a lot of these swing states, president obama is getting up to about 50% getting close and in some states he is just about over. it doesn't matter necessarily if there is a 4-point difference if he is reaching the 50% mark he is good shape. a lot of these voters are still waiting to see what mitt romney will bring. i talked to undecided voter in ohio the other day and he said he has taken his kids to president obama's rallies and romney's rallies, he likes the president but he wants to see if mitt romney can turn his campaign around. >> gregg: four or five points isn't that much in the grand scheme of things. final question. what hasn't been measured as yet is the continuing fallout over the tragic murder of christopher stevens. if evidence is uncovered that this president and his administration deliberately misled congress and tried to cover up this 9/11 terror attack what does it portend in the polls? >> that could be

ups and downs. at the debate last night, they fact-checked obama on the $5 trillion deficit, which was truly the romney mendacity -- on romney's front, i forget what they were fact checking but it was much more serious. you need voices inside and outside the democratic party, citizens of conscience, to call out when they hear the media not getting to the bottom of the issue. our media, let's be honest, has treated the campaign as a horse race. look at the debate. as i mentioned earlier, it was treated more like a theater performance than actually grappling with the substance. president obama, if you look of the coverage, i'm sure 92% of it had more to do with how disengaged he was than the actual substance. that is not helping for a country that prides itself on being a democracy with engaged and knowledgeable citizens. host: we are almost out of time. i will try to get two students in. guest: i will be brief. host: bolivia is a political science major. >> my question has to do with the rhetoric involving "the war on women" and the recent article he wrote. is it fair to classify wo

of the health care debate? >> i think mitt romney has it right in the sense that obama care is unpopular. pieces of it might be popular, but mitt romney's been campaigning that he would repeal obama care and replace it with pieces that are popular, but this whole idea about social issues i think is so fascinating and underreported that really it's the obama campaign and the democratic party that has tried to make this a social issues election. even turning questions of taxation into a question of fairness, not one of fiscal responsibility or sobriety because at the president himself said, you don't raise taxes in a recession, and we're still certainly struggling along in this economy. so taxation has been turned into a social issue. we saw in the mid-term election that 31% of gay men and women actually voted for the gop so. what did you see at the democratic convention? gay marriage being touted. finally, on women's issues. if you were to listen to the democratic party, apparently there's some deficit, some sortage sort a -- shortage of condoms, but women care most about the economy. democrats t

four years of president obama would be detrimental to the country. it's pretty plain and simple. president obama and republican nominee mitt romney are laying low today because they're getting ready to prepare for the debate, so it's the number 2s on the campaign trail. right behind me here, here's paul ryan stumping here in new hampshire, a crucial battleground state. when he's done here, he goes to ohio later today. another very big important battleground state. and that's the whole idea here, as the president and mitt romney get ready for the debate. paul ryan and vice president joe biden are on the campaign trail. specific new hampshire. the race here is kind of close. the most recent poll shows president obama with a five-point advantage over mitt romney. definitely a very close contest here in new hampshire. this is a state that may not know paul ryan very well, but knows mitt romney very well, who was governor of neighboring massachusetts. he owns a vacation home here in new hampshire. spends a lot of time in this state. >> thanks so much. we're going to keep an eye on it

about obama is his campaign in 2008 broke all the rules. giving speeches in a stadium and blowing off democratic interest groups who invite him to debate. john kerri wanted to endorse him and he said no. he is on the internet and social media and all this crazy stuff nobody had ever done before. i said to david axelrod i don't have a better idea for how he could have done this. why didn't you break the rules in washington and david axelrod's answer is because it is washington, not america. there really are sort of a prisoner to the tyranny of 60 votes and obama really does believe were certainly did believe that if we get the policy right the policies will take care of themselves. he said that was blowing down from the top. they took this almost perverse pride that we will put our head down and do the right thing. the best example that i tell in the book, democrats your heads will explode when you read this, tax cuts -- you may remember in 2008 george bush this stimulus. it was $180 billion and sent everybody a check. love, george bush. here is the money. obama did the same thing exce
